Correlation between field formation, proton translocation, and the light reactions in photosynthesis.

چکیده
Electrical field changes across the function membrane of photosynthesis have been measured via special absorption changes. These occur by the action of the field on pigments which are located within the membrane. — Proton translocation has been measured by absorption changes of added pH indicators. Repetitive flash technique has been used for the sensitive detection of these absorp tion changes. 1. Each of the two light reactions of photosynthesis sets on one half of the electrical field. 2. The action spectra indicate that the two light reactions which set on the field are identical with those which promote the electron transfer. 3. The voltage set on in the elementary act both light reactions is F0 = 50 mV. 4. Each of the two light reactions translocates one proton across the membrane. 5. The proton uptake is faster than S 'lO -3 sec. 6. Two protons are translocated per one electron transferred to a terminal acceptor. 7. A reaction scheme compatible with the measured correlation between the light reactions, elec tron transfer, field formation, and proton translocation is depicted in Fig. 7.

Correlation between plastoquinone reduction, field formation and proton translocation in photosynthesis.
The electron flow in photosynthesis from H20 to NADP® is driven by two photoactive molecules, chlorophyll-an and chlorophyll-ai. These two chlorophyll molecules are arranged in series within a chain of elec tron carriers. The chain is imbedded in the membrane of the thylakoids. The electron carrier plastoquinone is engaged between the two photoactive chlorophyll mole cules. During the transfe...
متن کاملInfluence of light and anoxia on chemiosmotic energy conservation in Dinoroseobacter shibae
In the present study we have investigated the influence of light and anoxia on the energetic state of the aerobic anoxygenic phototroph (AAP) Dinoroseobacter shibae. Respiration, chemiosmotic proton translocation and the adenylate energy charge (AEC) of the cells were measured comparing light versus dark and oxic versus anoxic conditions. Light caused a decrease of the respiration rates of wash...
متن کاملChanges in H+-ATP Synthase Activity, Proton Electrochemical Gradient, and pH in Pea Chloroplast Can Be Connected with Variation Potential
Local stimulation induces generation and propagation of electrical signals, including the variation potential (VP) and action potential, in plants. Burning-induced VP changes the physiological state of plants; specifically, it inactivates photosynthesis. However, the mechanisms that decrease photosynthesis are poorly understood. We investigated these mechanisms by measuring VP-connected systemi...
متن کاملCytochrome b-559 and proton conductance in oxygenic photosynthesis.
Although cytochrome b-559 has long been known as a membrane-bound redox component closely linked to the reaction center of the oxygen-generating photosystem (PSII), its role in photosynthesis has remained obscure. This paper reports evidence and outlines a hypothesis in support of a "b-559 cycle"-i.e., a light-induced, cytochrome b-559-dependent, cyclic electron transport pathway around PSII th...
متن کاملCoupled electron transfers in artificial photosynthesis.
Light-induced charge separation in molecular assemblies has been widely investigated in the context of artificial photosynthesis. Important progress has been made in the fundamental understanding of electron and energy transfer and in stabilizing charge separation by multi-step electron transfer. In the Swedish Consortium for Artificial Photosynthesis, we build on principles from the natural en...
